I just got back from scalloping in Steinhatchee, FL today. We went with Kristine’s parents and shared ridiculously small fishing shanty #17.

Cramped quarters aside, catching scallops is fun. Primarily because you have to actually catch them. Fishing has always been boring to me, but this is something I can get into. All you need is a snorkel, mask and some fins. The process consists of swimming around with your face in the water looking for scallops. When you see one you dive down, grab it and put it in a bag. It’s fun because a lot of the time they run away, and watching something in a shell run away is awesome. You have to be careful though, because they do bite. One got me on the nipple when I wasn’t paying attention. They also spit and hiss when they get upset which is fun to watch.
My wife is quite the scalloper. I do believe she caught way more than me. Next year I plan on putting her back in her place.
There are only 3 months a year and certain places that you can do it, but I’d recommend giving it a shot if you get a chance. It was fun for the whole family. Well not fun for the families of scallops I guess, but they only live for a year to begin with so don’t feel too sorry for them.

You didn’t read the wikipedia info on the scallop because it says they live up to 18 years. Man, those must be HUGE! You can’t trust the info you get in Steinhatchee apparently. You would think they would know a thing or two about scallops since that is the only thing that ever brings people to that small town.
Scalloping is fun and I plan on getting more than you next year as well. I have a talent and you can’t stop it!
